Protein Powder Shakes have become popular over the last decade or so. Athletes often use them as an instant meal, directly after working out. And when used as part of a balanced, healthy diet, protein powder shakes also promote healthy weight loss.

The Ingredients in Protein Powder Shakes

Some protein powder shakes are made from 100% protein, but most of them are a mixture of protein, carbohydrates and other ingredients. The most common types of proteins used in these shakes are casein, egg, milk, soy and whey. Itís important to read the ingredients on any bottle of protein powder shakes to make sure it doesnít contain anything you may be allergic to.

You may notice that the protein powder shakes you pick out has fat in it. Donít be alarmed; the fat found in these healthy shakes are not the harmful kind. Instead, theyíre essential & healthy, along with donít contribute in any way to cardiovascular risk in any way.

How to Choose a Protein Powder Shakes

It is recommended that our diet consist of the proper amount of protein to maintain our health. This amount varies, depending on our current eating habits. For example, strict vegetarians need more protein than, say, someone whoís diet is based solely on meat, fruits and vegetables.

Protein intake, though, is usually measured by the amount of exercise that you do. For athletes who focus on endurance, 1 to 1.6 grams of protein per pound of body weight should be incorporated into your diet. For strength training athletes, up to 2 grams of protein per pound of body weight is needed.

Either way, it is recommended that you purchase a protein powder shakes that will meet your specific needs. You may prefer more carbohydrates in your drink, or more protein. It doesnít matter. The important thing is to drink a protein shake after your workout, regardless of your personal preferences. If youíre not an athlete, youíll probably need something thatís in-between, with a close balance of protein and carbohydrates in your shake.

Protein Powder Shakes and Weight Loss

If you want to lose weight, you should get a shake that is at more than 50% protein. Adding protein to your diet does not add muscle mass; however working out and drinking protein powder shakes regularly can help. This is because protein helps with fat loss, leaving your body with more muscle to work with and tone.
